ABSTRACT

Dental caries, still one of the most common diseases affecting people around the world, has a multifactorial nature encompassing necessary (biofilm accumulation), determinant (exposure to sugars and fluoride) and modulating factors (biological and social). The concepts about caries learned at dental schools may directly influence the conduct of the future dentists regarding the control and treatment of this disease. The aim of this study was to determine the concept that students at the Piracicaba Dental School, University of Campinas, Brazil, have about dental caries. In this cross-sectional descriptive study, 274 students answered the discursive question “Conceptualize dental caries”. Students' answers were analyzed by a content analysis technique that allowed the creation of response categories and classification of the concepts in categories. Frequencies were expressed as absolute numbers and percentages. Differences between the responses according to the students' class years were tested by the chi-square test. Differences with p<0.05 were considered statistically significant. The response categories were: biological concept (53.6%), restrictive multifactorial concept (12.1%), comprehensive multifactorial concept (8.1%), transmissibility concept (15.8%), and other (10.4%). Differences in response category frequencies were seen between the class years (p<0.001). There was no consensus on the disease definition, although students predominantly had a biological concept of dental caries.

ABSTRACT

Leadership has many dimensions. Bolman and Deal synthesized the diverse body of leadership theory into four cognitive perspectives, or frames, which they labeled structural, human resource, political and symbolic. Effective educational leaders use multiple frames according to need, and consistently use the political frame. This study was undertaken to determine leadership styles of dental college principals in Lahore, using Bolman and Deal's leadership frames model, and to relate the leadership style to effectiveness of leadership and management. A questionnaire was administered to 43 faculty members in two dental colleges. Scores for the four leadership frames were calculated and related to effectiveness of leadership and management. Faculty perceived dental college principals to be strongest in the structural frame, followed closely by the human resource and symbolic frames, suggesting a multi-frame leadership orientation. The political frame was perceived as the weakest, but with high variance in ratings. The principals were perceived to be significantly more effective in management compared to leadership. There were no significant relationships between leadership frames and effectiveness of leadership and management

ABSTRACT

Objective - To evaluate the contamination of tubes of resin handled in clinics of Dental School, University Paulista (UNIP) at Manaus-AM. Methods - This was the detection of bacterial growth in cultures of samples collected in 13 tubes of composite resin, chosen at random and divided into three groups: Group 1 - unused and sealed tubes (3 tubes), Group 2 - tubes use of resin in a dental clinic UNIP 1 (5tubes), Group 3 - tubes of resin in use of dental clinic UNIP 2 (5 tubes) samples were collected in a laminar flow, by a single operator using swabs soaked in sterile saline, and then the samples grown in BHI broth and incubated at 37° C for 24-48 hours. After 48 hours of incubation was considered as positive when the tube was turbid medium. Of these, seeding was performed on BHI agar, Sabouraud and MacConkey. After seeding, the plates were incubated in a bacteriological incubator at 37°C for 24 hours in order to evaluate the colony morphology and Gram staining. Results - Of the samples collected in only one there was no bacterial growth, demonstrating that the outerwalls of the composite tubes were contaminated after the procedures performed by students of UNIP/ Manaus. It was also observed contamination of the tubes sealed by the manufacturer, and disinfection with 70% alcohol is not sufficient to decontaminate the surface of the tubes. Conclusion - There is a need to prioritize education in all biosafety procedures in dentistry, mainly for undergraduate students.

ABSTRACT

Edentulism is the major problem in the developing countries, and is widely spread in the current population, although the prevalence is declining and incidence of tooth loss is decreasing in the developed nations. The prevalence of edentulism in India varies from 60% to 69% of 25 years and above age group. It is obvious that the number of lost teeth increases with age leading to an increase in prevalence of partially edentulous patients. From a biological point of view, the replacement of a single missing tooth with an implant rather than a three-unit fixed partial denture, and the implant-supported complete denture has been proved more efficient in improving the mastication and maintaining the bone for a longer time and also more cost-effective treatment. Many dental schools throughout Europe and America have to a various extent introduced implant dentistry as part of the compulsory undergraduate curriculum. Thus, it becomes more essential to introduce implant dentistry at undergraduate level in Indian dental schools to manage the higher percentage of edentulism.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate the résumé of the graduation course of Dentistry of the Federal University of Minas Gerais and systemize principles to guide the evaluation and formulation of a new curricular proposal, according to the context of the crisis in the public university, the processes of institutional and graduation evaluation, the National Curricular Lines for the health area and the contribution of the graduates of the course. This study was divided in two parts. In the first one, a documentary research was made of the more recent legislation that deals with the evaluation of the superior education and the available bibliography on the subject. The discussion was made bringing for debate the model of the evaluation of the regulation character and the principles of the educative evaluation. The contextualization of the reasons and unfolding of the evaluation had as background the crisis of the public university and the great social debt with health. Seven principles that are considered as starting point for the evaluation and the change of the graduation education were delimited. The systematization of these elements were made on the basis of the recent experience of the discussion of the résumé of the course, in the bibliography about the movements to modify the superior education, of the area of education, the health and in the National Curricular Lines. The second part of this work congregated depositions of egresses of the Course of Dentistry graduated by the résumé implanted in 1992. A survey was carried through for a sample of 151 egresses by means of a questionnaire applied by telephone. The results strengthen the trend of females in the profession. It was identified a small participation of the egresses in the post-graduation and the preference for the area of Orthodontics. The majority of the sample declares itself as an independent professional working with health plans. A lesser number works with and without health plans. The number of professionals employed in the public sector is greater than in the private one. The professionals, even believing that the profession lost prestige, relate a reasonable level of professional satisfaction. The discussion of the results about the evaluation of the course was made in a way to relative the absolute character that, in the principle, could be attributed to the data in a first reading. The graduates, in general, related satisfaction with the course and with the résumé; with the performance of the professors; with the formation received in the ICB; with the technique qualification offered in the graduation and with the Supervised Practical Training. The worst items evaluated were: the physical installations and equipment; the relation school/job market and formation in connected areas to Dentistry. The choices made by the graduates in the questionnaire suggest a necessity to investigate which is the agreement of the egresses about the set of the professional formation, and its relation with the résumé. The fields of interest of the students and the professionals need to be considered in studies with graduates. This work identified an extensive bibliography about the institutional evaluation and a small production about the evaluation of graduation courses and studies with egresses. It is necessary to associate several elements in the evaluation of the graduation courses and two were presented in this work. It is also concluded that other studies should be carried through as purpose to improve the processes of evaluation of the superior education, mainly taking in account the necessity of an opportunity of an educative evaluation

ABSTRACT

For a long time there has been a need to establish a dental school in Kuwait, due to the fact that the majority of dentists working in Kuwait are expatriates from various countries. An Amiri decree in 1996 made it possible, and the first dental students were admitted to the Kuwait University Faculty of Dentistry in 1998. The mission of the Faculty of Dentistry is 'to promote oral health in Kuwait through education, research and cooperation with other professional health care institutions as well as the community at large'. A 6.5-year dental curriculum was completed after 2 years of committee work and was accepted by the University Council in 2001. This curriculum incorporates current trends in medical and dental education, such as the evidence-based and community-based approaches, problem-solving methodology for outcome-based learning, and competency achieved through comprehensive patient care
